Galliagh Community Safety Project

What is Community Safety?

Anti-social behaviour, crime and the fear of crime are all growing concerns for many communities throughout this city. These problems have a negative impact on the quality of life for many residents. Issues such as the lack of facilities, disregard for neighbours, for example, can have an influence on the type of activities people engage in.

Community Safety is all about tackling many of the problems associated with anti-social behaviour, crime and the fear of crime. It does so in a way that combines the efforts of all groups and individuals with a particular interest in addressing these problems. It seeks to assist local residents themselves in bringing about change within their own communities. It attempts to work in partnership with all statutory agencies working in the area. It tackles problems from a number of different angles.

By combining all the efforts of these groups, the Galliagh Community Safety Project hopes to begin the process of addressing all the issues that the people of Galliagh, identified in the community safety audit.

The project task force, is made up of representatives from Galliagh Community Development Group, NIACRO, Foyle Trust, Greater Shantallow Community Arts, Galliagh Residents Assoc. Off The Streets Initiative, St Josephs Youth Club, Derry City Council, Greater Shantallow Area Partnership, Galliagh Women’s Group, Leafair Community Assoc. Victim Support, Shantallow Youth Centre, Derry Healthy Cities and NI Fire Authority, and have completed a detailed Community Safety Audit in the area. Following from the audit a Community Safety Action Plan was agreed and is now in its second year of implementation.

The Action Plan represents the most comprehensive attempt to date to begin to make Galliagh a safer place for all to live in. In the first instance, a number of short, medium and long- term actions have been implemented to date with the remaining actions planned for the forthcoming two years.

To assist with the development of the overall Action Plan, Catherine McCann has been appointed the Community Safety Coordinator and based locally in Galliagh Community Development Group premises in 42 Fergleen Park.
